About the Chromatic Scale — The chromatic scale contains all 12 pitch classes of Western equal temperament, each separated by a half step (semitone). It is the foundation from which all other scales and modes are derived. Ascending passages traditionally use sharps; descending passages use flats — though the accidental display above lets you choose your preference.
